Contemporary Approaches to Qur’an and Sunna

IIIT Summer Institute for Scholars 2011

Contemporary Approaches to Qur’an and Sunna:

A FOCUS ON IFTAA & FATWAS:

History, Sources, Institutions, Issues & Future Role

July 11 – 22, 2011

The International Institute of Islamic Thought (IIIT) is pleased to announce its fourth Summer Institute for Scholars to be convened at IIIT headquarters in Herndon, Virginia, USA between July 11- 22, 2011. The purpose of the Summer Institute is to bring together and engage senior and young scholars with a particular interest or expertise in Qur’anic studies or Sunna in focused, organized discussions of topics related to a contemporary understanding and articulation of issues involving Qur’an and Sunna. The specific objectives of the seminar are:

- To develop methods or approaches of understanding Qur’an and Sunna that are both authentic and relevant to contemporary realities and sensibilities in the West and the Muslim world.

- To suggest means and instruments of engaging the scholarly community, the religious community, political leaders, the media and the public at large in learning processes, debates or experiences that make intelligible the wisdom of the Qur’an and the Sunna and their relevance to contemporary human affairs.

- To broaden the scope of conversations on issues pertaining to Qur’an and Sunna through the inclusion of social and physical scientists beside the scholars of the traditional Islamic disciplines.

The focus of this year’s program is on Iftaa and Fatwas within contemporary Muslim societies as well as where Muslims are minorities. Deliberations will center around the an status of Iftaa and Ftawas and their role within the nexus of the complex relations between religious institutions, the state and society at large.

Papers may address topics related to the following areas:

- The history of Iftaa and Fatwas from the early period of Islam, to the Umayyad and Abbasid dynasties, throughout the Ottoman Empire and up to the contemporary period.

- Sources of fatwa and approaches to Iftaa with a focus on the major schools of Islamic jurisprudence, both Sunn and Shia. Of particular interest is a Maqasid approach to the making and understanding of Fatwas and its implications on interpreting Qurt’an and Sunna within a contemporary context.

- The institutionalization of Iftaa in the contemporary era and the major institutions for Iftaa and fatwa (governmental, sectarian, independent, etc).

- The major issues that face current practices of Iftaa both in Muslim majority and Muslim minority countries. In particular, issues of authority, legitimacy and relevance should be addressed.

- The future role of Iftaa and fatwa and the challenges ahead.

Interested scholars should send a one page abstract to abstracts2011@iiit.org together with an updated CV by February 15, 2011. IIIT will notify scholars whose abstracts are accepted by February 28, 2011. Final papers should be submitted to IIIT by email no later than May 15, 2011. IIIT will notify scholars whose papers have been accepted for presentation during the program by June 15, 2011. Papers presented during the program will be considered for publication in an edited volume to be published by IIIT.

IIIT will cover the cost of travel within continental USA and Canada and hotel accommodation in Herndon, VA for participants with accepted papers. In addition, each participating scholar will get a $1000 (one thousand dollars) to cover living expenses during the ten days program and another $1000 honorarium upon submission of a publishable paper for the volume.

panel on artisanry for Saharan Crossroads conference in Niger, July 8-10, 2011

Panel Abstract for Saharan Crossroads: Views from the South Conference sponsored by the West African Research Association and the American Institute for Maghrib Studies (Niamey, Niger, July 8-10, 2011) Patterns in Circulation: Trans-Saharan Artisanry and Design Artisanal traditions across the Saharan and Sahel regions bear the imprints of centuries of contact between North and sub-Saharan Africa fostered by caravan trade, travel, migration, Islamic schooling, European colonization, and other forms of exchange that have moved material goods across the desert. Drawing inspiration from the collection of the Tiksiwin Museum in Marrakech, which highlights the artistic continuities in trans-Saharan material culture, and active artisanship at the National Museum of Niger in Niamey, this panel focuses on the circulation and exchange of a range of goods produced by professional artisans. Some questions that will be examined include: How have artisans incorporated design elements and materials acquired through cross-regional contact? In what ways have changes in Saharan trade transformed relations between producers and consumers of artisanry? How are Saharan crafts being promoted and marketed outside the region today? Through an interdisciplinary examination of the historical, anthropological, and economic dimensions of artisanal production, the panel investigates the ongoing circulation of techniques, designs and uses of popular material culture across the Sahara and the social dynamics of the communities that produce it. Areas of particular interest: * historical and contemporary influences of artisanal styles between sub-Saharan and North Africa (in the production of metalwork, beads, woodwork, leather, cloth, couture, basketry, pottery, etc.) * history and sociocultural practices of artisan communities * gendered dimensions of artisanal production * economics of artisan trades and trans-Saharan commerce * transformations in materials, techniques or uses of artisanry Please email a paper title and abstract of 200 words (in English or French) as an MS Word doc or pdf to Tara Deubel at: deubel@usf.edu by Oct. 20, 2010 for consideration. NB: For selected participants, paper abstracts and a 2-pg. CV will be due to WARA/AIMS by email by Nov. 30, 2010 for consideration of the panel. -- Tara F. La statistique en action

Revue Sociologie et sociétés vol. 44, n°1, printemps 2012

Call for Papers - MESA 2010 - National Body, National Self

MESA 2010

National Body, National Self: the Mechanics of Modern Selfhood in the Early Twentieth-Century Middle East and North Africa

The purpose of this panel is to investigate the ways in which nationalist political rhetoric - set against the backdrop of a colonial presence - was translated into the lived experience of the individual body. We are interested in exploring the ways in which nationalism became linked to the individual body or mind and, in the event of tension or discomfort in this encounter, how the individual sought to resolve any contradictions. The goal is to work toward a social history of nationalism in the everyday lives of residents of the region.

Here are some of the questions we are interested in:

- How did nationalism and colonialism manifest themselves practically in the daily lives of residents of this region?

- How did nationalism and colonialism map themselves onto people’s bodies?

- What linkages existed between colonial and nationalist attempts to control bodies and shape selves?

- How did residents of the region negotiate the tension of colonial and nationalist claims to authority in the quotidian context?

- How do the mechanics of selfhood in this context compare with the rhetorical aims of colonial and nationalist authorities?

- In what ways might theories of gender enrich our understanding of the subjective experiences of individuals during this period?

- In what ways might theories of psychology enrich our understanding of these dynamics?

If you are interested in treating any of these questions, please email Sam Dolbee (srd32@georgetown.edu) or Nadim Bawalsa (nyb@georgetown.edu) by 8 February with more information on your proposed topic.
