CALL FOR PAPERS

The newly established Research Network 35 "Sociology of Migration"
within the European Sociological Association invites papers to be
presented during the 10th bi-annual ESA Conference to take place
in Geneva, September 7-10, 2011.

The Research Network �Sociology of Migration� provides a
platform for all scholars who are dealing with questions of
immigration and emigration, integration and diversity within
Europe. The RN wants to offer a platform to further the
theoretical and methodological understanding of migration
processes and their impacts on societies. Comparative European
research, integration of different methodologies and
inter-disciplinarity are three major pillars on which the RN is
based.
You are cordially invited to submit an abstract for one of the
following eight sessions:
1. Global governance of migration and global social inequalities
(chairs: Catherine de Wenden, Christoph Reinprecht)

2. European immigration between needs and fears
(chair: Joaquín Arango)

3. Migration and shifting boundaries of belonging
(chair: Ludger Pries)

Please submit your abstract before February 25th, 2011 via the

There will be two types of papers accepted (oral and distributed
papers). Decisions on acceptance of abstracts will be communicated
until April 6th, 2011.

In order to promote a high quality of the discussions, all accepted

L’Institut Méditerranéen de Recherches Avancées (IMéRA) lance un appel à candidatures international pour accueillir en résidence des chercheurs internationaux émergents et confirmés, de toutes origines disciplinaires, pour leur permettre de se rencontrer, de mener à bien des travaux qui exigent plusieurs mois de liberté sans contrainte administrative ou d’enseignement.

La vocation de l’IMERA est d’offrir aux scientifiques un lieu, un environnement, un espace « d’inter collégialité » disciplinaire qui leur permette d’avancer, aussi bien théoriquement que pratiquement, dans cette ouverture à d’autres savoirs et questions.

L’accueil en résidence à l’IMéRA est ouvert aux chercheurs académiques et non-académiques de toutes origines nationales et disciplinaires. Les disciplines artistiques et littéraires sont incluses.

Les recherches accueillies à l’IMéRA développent les interactions entre sciences humaines et sociales (SHS), entre SHS et sciences exactes et expérimentales, ainsi que les relations entre arts et sciences. Elles explorent et développent les espaces qui peuvent s’ouvrir entre disciplines.

Penser le corps au Maghreb

L’Institut de Recherche sur le Maghreb Contemporain (IRMC-Tunis) lance un appel à contribution pour un ouvrage collectif : Penser le corps au Maghreb. Les propositions de contribution, d’une longueur de 3000 signes, sont à envoyer avant le 28 février à corps.maghreb@gmail.com. Les textes définitifs sont attendus, au plus tard, le 27 juin 2011. Ceux qui seront définitivement acceptés paraitront dans l’ouvrage collectif au premier trimestre de l’année 2012.

A FOCUS ON IFTAA & FATWAS:

History, Sources, Institutions, Issues & Future Role

July 11 – 22, 2011

The International Institute of Islamic Thought (IIIT) is pleased to announce its fourth Summer Institute for Scholars to be convened at IIIT headquarters in Herndon, Virginia, USA between July 11- 22, 2011. The purpose of the Summer Institute is to bring together and engage senior and young scholars with a particular interest or expertise in Qur’anic studies or Sunna in focused, organized discussions of topics related to a contemporary understanding and articulation of issues involving Qur’an and Sunna.The specific objectives of the seminar are:

- To develop methods or approaches of understanding Qur’an and Sunna that are both authentic and relevant to contemporary realities and sensibilities in the West and the Muslim world.

- To suggest means and instruments of engaging the scholarly community, the religious community, political leaders, the media and the public at large in learning processes, debates or experiences that make intelligible the wisdom of the Qur’an and the Sunna and their relevance to contemporary human affairs.

- To broaden the scope of conversations on issues pertaining to Qur’an and Sunna through the inclusion of social and physical scientists beside the scholars of the traditional Islamic disciplines.

The focus of this year’s program is on Iftaa and Fatwas within contemporary Muslim societies as well as where Muslims are minorities. Deliberations will center around the an status of Iftaa and Ftawas and their role within the nexus of the complex relations between religious institutions, the state and society at large.

Papers may address topics related to the following areas:

- The history of Iftaa and Fatwas from the early period of Islam, to the Umayyad and Abbasid dynasties, throughout the Ottoman Empire and up to the contemporary period.

- Sources of fatwa and approaches to Iftaa with a focus on the major schools of Islamic jurisprudence, both Sunn and Shia. Of particular interest is a Maqasid approach to the making and understanding of Fatwas and its implications on interpreting Qurt’an and Sunna within a contemporary context.

- The institutionalization of Iftaa in the contemporary era and the major institutions for Iftaa and fatwa (governmental, sectarian, independent, etc).

- The major issues that face current practices of Iftaa both in Muslim majority and Muslim minority countries. In particular, issues of authority, legitimacy and relevance should be addressed.

- The future role of Iftaa and fatwa and the challenges ahead.

Interested scholars should send a one page abstract to abstracts2011@iiit.org together with an updated CV by February 15, 2011. IIIT will notify scholars whose abstracts are accepted by February 28, 2011. Final papers should be submitted to IIIT by email no later than May 15, 2011. IIIT will notify scholars whose papers have been accepted for presentation during the program by June 15, 2011. Papers presented during the program will be considered for publication in an edited volume to be published by IIIT.

IIIT will cover the cost of travel within continental USA and Canada and hotel accommodation in Herndon, VA for participants with accepted papers. In addition, each participating scholar will get a $1000 (one thousand dollars) to cover living expenses during the ten days program and another $1000 honorarium upon submission of a publishable paper for the volume.

الإدماج السياسي للقوى الإسلامية بالمغرب

أصدر مركز الجزيرة للدراسات ضمن سلسلة كتب الجزيرة كتابا بعنوان: الإدماج السياسي للإسلاميين في المغرب للباحث رشيد مقتدر.

وكان المركز قد نشر سابقا تقديما لهذا العمل الجاد الذي قدمه صاحبه لنيل الدكتوراه في العلوم السياسية بجامعة الحسن الثاني بالدار البيضاء بالمغرب.

وقد حاول مقتدر أن يثير أسئلة عديدة من أبرزها: ماذا حقق الإسلاميون برهانهم على العمل السياسي؟ وكيف استطاع النظام السياسي توظيف وسائله لتذويب الإسلاميين ضمن بنيته؟ وكيف نقيم مسار الإدماج السياسي للإسلاميين؟ وما أبرز العوائق والمشاكل التي اعترضته؟ وما استراتيجية الإسلاميين في التعامل مع النظام؟ وهل استطاعوا الاندماج داخل النظام السياسي؟

وقد اعتمد الباحث منهجا نظريا قوامه المنهج التاريخي، المنهج الوصفي، المنهج المقارن، المنهج الإحصائي. فضلا عن منهج ميداني يرتكز على تقنية المقابلة مع عدد من قيادات الحركة الإسلامية وبرلمانييها، بالإضافة إلى مزجها بتقنية الملاحظة بالمشاركة.

وبين الباحث أن تجربة الإسلاميين السياسية في المغرب اطلعت بالوظائف الآتية: شرعنة السلطة وتقويتها، والمساهمة في التنفيس عن الاحتقانات والتذمرات الاجتماعية، وإعطاء دينامية جديدة للعمل البرلماني. القيام بوظيفة الرقابة الأخلاقية داخل الحقل السياسي، ثم إبراز مدى قدرة النظام السياسي على الاحتواء والمحافظة على الاستقرار السياسي.

كما أفضت هذه التجربة في محك العمل السياسي إلى النتائج التالية:

إن واقع اندماج الإسلاميين داخل المجال العام أبرز مجموعة من التناقضات السياسية والإيديولوجية في علاقتهم أولا بالمؤسسة الملكية، وفي علاقتهم من جهة ثانية بالقوى السياسية المشكلة للأغلبية الحكومية خاصة اليسارية منها، وهو ما أفضى إلى تأزم العلاقة بين السلطة والإسلاميين التي تم احتوائها بتقديم الإسلاميين للعديد من التنازلات كثمن سياسي لعملية الإدماج.

سعيها لتطوير بعض المفاهيم الملتبسة وإنضاجها من قبيل الديمقراطية وعلاقتها بالشورى، المشاركة السياسية والمغزى من الرهان على العمل السياسي، التعددية السياسية والثقافية ودورها في الحد من الرؤية الإطلاقية التي ترى في مشروعها الكفيل بإخراج الأمة من مشاكلها ومعضلاتها، الحداثة وكيفية الاستفادة من إنجازاتها، التعايش مع الآخر المختلف مرجعيا وأيديولوجيا وسياسيا.

أنها شكلت محكا حقيقيا لمدى نجاعة المشاريع الفكرية والسياسية للإسلاميين، ومناسبة لإبراز صدقية طروحاتهم وقدرتهم على إنجاز ما لم يحققه غيرهم من القوى اليسارية واللبرالية، ومدى تمكنهم من التشبع بقيم الحوار وتطوير القيم والممارسات السياسية الحضارية، وجعلها أكثر نضجا وديمقراطية، في ظل ثقافة سياسية عربية إسلامية قيد التحول لتجاوز معضلة التسلط السياسي والاجتماعي.

الانتقال من النظرة التبسيطية للحكم وممارسة الشأن العام بفضل الممارسة السياسية، إلى تكوين رؤية أكثر واقعية بحكم نضج التجربة السياسية داخل المؤسسات السياسية للدولة، والاحتكاك مع مختلف القوى السياسية واحتراف العمل السياسي، عبر آليات اشتغال البرلمان وهيئاته، كاللجان البرلمانية والأسئلة الشفوية والكتابية، وتقديم ملتمس الرقابة وغيرها من الوسائل والطرق، الشيء الذي أدمج بعدا جديدا في تجربة هذا التيار وطور بعض طروحاته ومشاريعه بالاحتكاك بالواقع السياسي الفعلي.

Appel à candidature: La fabrique des traducteurs

Le Collège international des traducteurs littéraires (CITL), à Arles, accueille depuis le 1er septembre « La Fabrique des traducteurs ». Ce programme a pour objectif de donner à de jeunes traducteurs en début de carrière l’occasion de travailler avec d’autres traducteurs expérimentés et de mieux connaître le paysage de la traduction et de l’édition dans les deux pays.
